Bidirectional tri-color QoS, 24× faster subscriber onboarding, near-linear multi-core scaling, and a drop-in Grafana observability package

BlueDot today released Alpha 2 of the Community Edition of its Quantum IPoE BNG platform, the free carrier-grade IPoE L3 subscriber edge for small ISP and WISP operators. The release raises the Community Edition session limit from its launch ceiling to 1,000 concurrent subscriber sessions and adds four significant capabilities: bidirectional tri-color QoS, a re-engineered onboarding pipeline, validated multi-core scaling, and a turnkey Grafana observability package. General availability will raise the ceiling to 5,000 sessions.

“Alpha 1 proved a small operator could stand up a real subscriber edge in half an hour,” said Jeff Elpern, BlueDot founder. “Alpha 2 is about what happens after that — policing traffic in both directions, onboarding subscribers as fast as they sign up, and seeing all of it in the tools operators already run.”

Bidirectional Tri-Color QoS

Traditional network policing often restricts traffic symmetrically or focuses heavily on a single direction, leaving systems vulnerable to unexpected congestion. BlueDot’s new bidirectional architecture solves this by actively metering traffic coming and going. The system deploys Two-Rate Three-Color Marking (trTCM) seamlessly across both upload and download streams for every session the Community Edition supports. Using green, yellow, and red color-coding based on RFC 2698, it prioritizes contract-compliant packets, temporarily accommodates safe burst traffic with downstream DSCP marking, and drops violating packets before they can cause a bottleneck.

Best-in-Class Onboarding

Alpha 2 delivers a 24× acceleration in onboarding performance over Alpha 1. By re-engineering the architecture to eliminate serial punt processing bottlenecks, the platform now achieves roughly 1,000 subscribers per second on modern high-end x86 servers. The parallelized pipeline means network onboarding no longer degrades under sustained peak loads or requires system restarts to recover throughput.

Multi-Core Linear Scaling: A Frictionless Path from 40G to 400G

Alpha 2 redefines performance predictability with near-linear multi-core scaling. Unlike architectures where incremental compute returns decline significantly, Alpha 2 achieves approximately 98% scaling efficiency per added core, sustained through three cores at zero packet loss. This near-exact linear tracking — validated across 56 test runs — provides a foundation for ISPs preparing to scale into the 100G to 400G throughput range.

For Community Edition users, the architecture delivers two immediate advantages:

  • Maximum efficiency at entry level. Operators can reach a full 40G throughput level using a minimal worker core count, lowering hardware footprint and hosting costs.
  • Frictionless, code-identical upgrades. As an ISP grows, Alpha 2 offers a direct upgrade path to higher throughput. Because the underlying technology is identical across editions, moving from the Community Edition to commercial-tier 100G or 400G capacity requires no application changes and no network re-engineering — it is unlocked through a license upgrade.

Drop-In Network Observability with Zero-Trust Security

BlueDot is also introducing a Grafana dashboard plugin that integrates into an operator’s existing monitoring infrastructure. Powered by a built-in Prometheus read proxy, the plugin enables one-click Grafana dashboard deployment alongside out-of-the-box alert rules and IPMI chassis sensor tracking. The architecture uses scoped, read-only keys, ensuring the Grafana environment accesses the performance metrics it needs and nothing else.

The package extracts data directly from the Prometheus operational database inside QuantumTouch to deliver five production-ready views in the operator’s own Grafana environment:

  • BNG Overview — real-time tracking of subscriber sessions and Broadband Network Gateway metrics.
  • Interfaces & Dataplane — visibility into line-rate packet throughput, interfaces, and packet handling.
  • Access & Security — telemetry on authentication, session security, and network access points.
  • Chassis & Power — hardware-level monitoring via IPMI sensors to track physical box health and power draw.
  • Platform Health — core system metrics, CPU and memory performance, and daemon stability.

Availability

Quantum IPoE BNG Community Edition Alpha 2 is available free at bluedot-insight.com/products/quantumbng/. The platform requires commodity x86 servers running Ubuntu 24.04 (Linux kernel 6.14). Existing Alpha 1 operators can upgrade in place. Commercial editions with expanded capacity, 100G and 400G throughput tiers, and support will follow.
