Pre-built VirtualBox image and a full video walkthrough let small ISPs and WISPs run the free Community Edition on any laptop, without touching the command line
RENO, Nev. — August 17, 2026 — BlueDot today released a one-click evaluation appliance for the Quantum IPoE BNG Community Edition, along with a full video walkthrough that takes an evaluator from download to live subscribers on the wire in under 15 minutes.
The Community Edition launched on August 1 as a free, carrier-grade IPoE broadband network gateway for the roughly 65,000 small ISP and WISP operators priced out of the market by traditional BNG vendors. The bare-metal installation path was already available, but it requires an evaluator to allocate hardware, prepare a Linux server, and run through a scripted install — decisions many operators reasonably want to defer until they have seen the platform in motion. The result is a well-known friction: technology that looks promising on paper often never gets tried at all.
The new appliance removes that first-mile friction. An operator downloads a single OVA file, double-clicks to import into VirtualBox, boots the virtual machine, and lands on the QuantumTouch operator console with the data plane already running. No server allocation. No install script. No command line. The full evaluation — from clicking the download link to watching live subscribers come online with per-subscriber QoS — fits inside a coffee break. This environment includes a complete subscriber simulator and traffic generator, making a complete lab solution on a single laptop.
The evaluation appliance ships as a standard OVA compatible with VirtualBox on macOS, Linux, and Windows. It runs on 4 vCPU and 12 GiB of RAM — sizing that fits comfortably on a modern developer laptop — and boots pre-configured with QuantumTouch, the Quantum IPoE data plane, and the CPESIM subscriber simulator plugin. The appliance runs Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with the standard 6.8 kernel and uses the same code paths as the bare-metal Community Edition build. The forwarding path, the operator console, and the AAA plane are byte-for-byte the deployed alpha; the appliance is not a demo build.
An evaluator boots the VM, opens https://localhost:8443 in a browser (a single pane of glass for the BNG operator plane), signs in to QuantumTouch, and can start the bundled subscriber simulator to bring live subscribers online with per-subscriber QoS and active traffic — all in a single sitting. What that evaluator sees is what a production operator sees: the same dashboards, the same health verdict, the same audit timeline. Nothing is hidden behind a paywall.
A companion walkthrough video, published today to BlueDot’s YouTube channel, captures the entire flow at native pace: VirtualBox import, VM boot, first login, CPU pinning verification, CPESIM install, and eight subscribers coming online with live throughput. The video is four and a half minutes long and joins BlueDot’s QuantumBNG Quick Start series, giving operators a way to see the platform work before committing to a download.
Lowering the evaluation barrier is a deliberate part of BlueDot’s Community Edition strategy. Small ISP and WISP operators typically evaluate infrastructure outside working hours, on the equipment they already have, with no dedicated lab. Every additional step between curiosity and a running instance is a step where evaluation stops. Fifteen minutes on a laptop, no allocated hardware, is the threshold at which a real evaluation can happen for the operators the Community Edition is built for.
